Raiders win Na Menehune Classic

By

POSTED: Thursday, December 31, 2009

For now, it appears Raider nation rules.

'Iolani overpowered Kamehameha 57-46 last night in the final of Na Menehune Holiday Classic at Moanalua High School.

Trevyn Tulonghari had 13 points and six rebounds to lead 'Iolani (7-5). Jarrett Arakawa added 10 points. With a healthy lineup, 'Iolani was at full strength this week for the first time.

Shane Matayoshi had 11 points to lead Kamehameha. The defending state champion played without leading scorer and rebounder Micah Christenson, who was at a mainland volleyball tournament.

'Iolani's smothering defense set the tone early, forcing nine Kamehameha turnovers in the first quarter. After a 3-pointer by Arakawa, the Raiders led 13-6, and they extended the lead to 23-10 on a flurry of fastbreak buckets midway through the second quarter. Center Josiah Sukumaran benefited with three layups and reserve guard Reid Saito drained a trey during the run.

The Raiders' run continued in the second half. 'Iolani got baskets from Kainoa Chu, Tulonghari and Sukumaran—all in the paint—for a 32-16 lead with 5:59 left in the third quarter.

Arakawa's 3-pointer from the corner off a feed from Ammon Baldomero opened the lead to 40-22 with 2:21 left in the third.

From there, 'Iolani spread the floor—not into a four-corner offense—and worked a motion attack while melting the clock down.

The Raiders patiently got some back-door layups and Kamehameha never got the lead down to single digits.
