Homemade device explodes in Maili

A homemade explosive device detonated in Maili last night damaging property, according to police.

At 8:34 p.m., police received a call about the explosion and an injured child at 87-219 Kulaaupuni St., but officers later canceled an ambulance that was sent to the scene, saying no one was hurt.

Police said the device apparently caused rocks to fly up and damage property. Officers opened a reckless endangering and a criminal property damage investigation.

Blaze in Liliha linked to fireworks

Firefighters extinguished a small wildfire believed to be fireworks-related last night in Liliha.

About 6:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a 500-square-foot fire on unimproved land burning up a steep slope near Ahiahi Place, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

Firefighters had to stretch fire hoses from distant fire hydrants to reach the blaze near Lanakila Health Center, Seelig said.

The fire was extinguished about 7:15 p.m. No one was hurt and no buildings were damaged.

Hiker rescued after injuring her foot

Firefighters rescued a woman who hurt her foot while hiking on Hauula Loop Trail.

The woman, whose age was not available, injured her foot and couldn't walk out about 6:30 p.m. yesterday, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

Firefighters hiked about 20 minutes to reach the woman, then placed her in a helicopter net. A rescue helicopter carried the woman off the trail and transferred her to paramedics about 7:45 p.m., Seelig said.

Third male charged in Hilo robbery

A third person has been charged in connection with a robbery last week at Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo.

Daniel Jordan Mills, 19, faces charges of second-degree robbery and second-degree theft and is being held at the Hilo cellblock in lieu of $7,000 bail.

Police said about 10:20 p.m. Dec. 23, a 27-year-old man reported being assaulted by two males who stole an undisclosed amount of money from a kiosk in the shopping center.

That night, officers arrested 18-year-old Ocean Hegent of Hawaiian Paradise Park, who has been charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree theft.

A 14-year-old boy was also arrested that night and charged with first-degree robbery.

Hegent's bail was set at $5,000; the boy's case was turned over to Family Court.

3 are wanted in theft of generator

Police are looking for two men and a woman who allegedly stole a generator from a Kailua fireworks tent and attacked a 29-year-old man who was working as a security guard.

Police said the man was investigating why the power to the tent had gone out at about 2:45 a.m. Dec. 20, and found two men taking the generator and putting it into the bed of a blue pickup truck.

The truck fled the area and the victim followed it in another vehicle, police said. When the pickup pulled to the side of the road, the victim stopped behind it, and the driver and passenger got out.

The driver then allegedly threw a standard-size bolt cutter at the victim's windshield, shattering it, as the victim remained seated inside, police said.

The victim tried to block the truck from escaping and called 911. The pickup fled again, crashing into the victim's vehicle.

The victim followed the pickup and stopped behind it. The pickup driver then tried to reverse into the victim's vehicle, police said.

The pickup driver and passenger got out of the truck a second time and tried to get into the victim's vehicle, but failed, police said.

All three suspects then fled on foot

The driver is described as a man in his 20s, 5 feet 6, 160 pounds with a medium build, wearing a black long-sleeve shirt and jeans.

The passenger is described as a man in his 20s, 5 feet 9, 180 pounds, with a medium build, wearing a black shirt. Police did not provide a description of the woman.
