Question: We want a purebred. Is it better to get one from a local breeder or pet store?

Answer: A local breeder gives you the opportunity to inspect living quarters and learn about the life of the mother including how often she's been bred. Responsible breeders want owners to be diligent in doing their homework. So don't be shy to ask a lot of questions. Records of the puppy's veterinary visits should be available, and the breeder should explain their medical history.

Purebreds are sometimes available at the Hawaiian Humane Society. By filling out a special request form, the shelter will call if a match is found.
