Surfers will get a mixed Christmas gift in the form of “;very large”; but “;dangerous surf”; today, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters have issued a high-surf warning through 6 p.m. tomorrow, and say that north and west shores of Kauai and Niihau, and the northern shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui will see waves with 30- to 40-foot faces today, with higher sets possible on outer reefs.

Surf along the west shores of Oahu and Molokai could be 20 to 30 feet, while surf along the west side of Hawaii island could be 8 to 12 feet, forecasters said.

The high surf is expected to result in dangerous swimming conditions, potentially deadly rip currents and severe beach erosion, the weather service said.

Oahu lifeguards rescued five people and issued 300 verbal warnings on the North Shore yesterday, said Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic.
