Big Island firefighters rein in blaze

A Big Island fire helicopter today will survey a 1,500-acre brush fire that burned for three days and was still smoldering last night on the island's Kona side.

Firefighters had the fire contained yesterday, surrounding it with fire breaks built using bulldozers, said fire Battalion Chief Marshall Luke.

Four firefighters stayed overnight to monitor the fire.

About 2 inches of rain that fell within 30 minutes yesterday morning aided firefighters putting out hotspots along the perimeter, Luke said.

The blaze, on private ranch land in the 4,000- to 4,600-foot elevation, was reported about 1:50 p.m. Thursday, some 8 miles mauka of Highway 11 in Kealakekua. No one was injured and no structures were threatened. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Parking lot argument ends in arrest

Police arrested a 27-year-old Waipahu man Saturday after a traffic incident at Waikele Shopping Center escalated into an argument and a threat with a knife.

About 12:25 p.m. Saturday, the suspect and a 27-year-old man were arguing in the parking lot when the suspect took a knife from his vehicle and threatened the other man, police said.

The suspect fled, but officers found him at his Hiapo Street home and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.

Man, 25, caught inside Kailua house

A 25-year-old Kailua man was arrested Saturday after he was caught inside a Kailua house.

About 2:40 a.m., a 39-year-old resident found a man in his home and detained him while his wife called police.

The suspect, of Kuuhoa Place, probably entered through an unlocked door, police said.

Officers booked the suspect on suspicion of unauthorized entry into a dwelling.

Kaimuki man missing since Dec. 13

Police are asking for the public's help to find a 47-year-old Kaimuki man who was last seen leaving his 9th Avenue home for a daily walk on Dec. 13.

Bing Bing Luo is Chinese, 5-feet, 4-inches tall, and 143 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He doesn't speak English.

Woman sought for probation breach

Big Island police are looking for a 20-year-old Kealakekua woman who is wanted for violating terms of probation.

Kearston Cheyenne Starla Clark is described as 5-feet, 6-inches tall, 145 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair.

Clark was last seen on Oahu, but may be in the Kona area of the Big Island, police said.

Man arrested for Dec. 4 punch-up

Police arrested a 30-year-old McCully man who allegedly punched a 40-year-old man at the entrance to a Waikiki bar.

The incident happened about 11:30 p.m. Dec. 4. The victim told police the man who punched him works at a nearby liquor establishment.

On Friday, the older man saw his alleged assailant in Waikiki and called police. Officers arrested the younger man near the Waikiki Town Center on suspicion of second- degree assault.
