Bar brews up a tasty night out

Near popular Hanauma Bay, Kona Brewing Co. is a great place to stop after a day at the beach, a long day of work or just to catch up with friends and watch a game. Virtually every seat at the bar offers breathtaking marina and mountain views.

Located in Koko Marina Center, the restaurant recently updated its bar area and renamed it the Liquid Aloha Lounge. Happy hour is offered only in this area, with food specials consisting of a variety of breaded dishes and newly introduced pizzas. I particularly enjoyed the hummus and pita plate, which comes with an array of fresh veggies, olives and peppers.

Overall Rating (out of 5):

Despite recent updates, Kona Brewing's pupu menu is still quite minimal. The cocktail menu, however, has changed dramatically and now includes wine and well drinks in addition to draft beers. It's nice to see an effort has been made to accommodate a wider range of guests.

And while not discounted during happy hour, Kona Brewing Co. offers a new drink called the Beer-Tini—a fusion cocktail mixed with liquors, juices and the restaurant's favorite beers. I was quite surprised how delicious a beer in a martini could be. Even if not on special, these interesting mixes are well worth the extra money.

Happy Hour:
» 3 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays
» Select pupus are half-off during happy hour
» $3 off all large pizzas
» Happy hour for two: four draft beers and two pupus for $20 (not including tax and tip)

» Free parking is available in Koko Marina Center lot.

Pupu Picks:
» Hummus and Pita Bread ($5)
» Garlic Cheese Bread ($3)
» Roasted Garlic ($3.50)
» Pizza by the slice ($3)

What Needs Help:
» The menu needs to be diversified to offer a wider selection for guests.
