Waters off Anini Beach claim Utah visitor's life

A 70-year-old Utah woman apparently drowned at Anini Beach on Kauai's North Shore yesterday, according to Kauai police.

Witnesses said the woman and her husband, who is also in his 70s, were snorkeling in the boat channel about 15 feet from the shore.

The couple went farther out after learning that there were turtles in deeper water, a news release said.

The couple then got caught in a rip current which carried them even farther out, the release said. After struggling to swim in, the husband told his wife to hold onto a channel marker about 75 yards offshore while he swam for help.

A bystander swam out and found the woman floating face down. He brought her to shore, and another bystander began cardiopulmonary resuscitation until fire rescue personnel arrived from Hanalei, the release said.

The woman was pronounced dead at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.

Police said a hiker discovered the body Nov. 30. They do not suspect foul play.

The boy got a BB gun from his house and allegedly shot the man. The woman took control of the BB gun and allegedly shot the neighbor a second time. Police arrested the woman and teenager on suspicion of second-degree assault.
