Award earns painter solo show at Academy

Longtime Hawaii painter Sanit Khewhok has been selected by the Honolulu Academy of Arts as the recipient of the biennial Catharine E.B. Cox Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts.

Part of the award is a solo exhibit of the artist's work, which is scheduled for July to October 2010.

Khewhok, curator of the Hawaii Pacific Univeristy art gallery, was born in Thailand and moved to Hawaii in 1986. He served as chief conservator and collections manager at The Contemporary Museum from 1988 to 2008.

Happenings at TCM

» The Contemporary Museum is offering a two-hour art exploration intended for children affected by Furlough Friday, 10 a.m. Friday and Dec. 18. The event will include gallery tours, storytelling and an art project.

» Maya Lea Portner's “;+/- Selected works with Paper”; wraps it up at the museum's Cafe Gallery on Sunday. The exhibit includes drawings, paper-cuts and sewn constructions.

» The museum recently won a grant from MetLife Foundation in support of its TCM On the Go! community outreach program. It was among 15 museums awarded $1 million by MetLife for exhibitions, artist residencies and other community programs.
