Contest invites youth to talk story

A celebration of “;My Hawaii Story Project”; will take place at noon Dec. 12. The “;My Hawaii”; fair features free activities and educational materials for all ages. At the culmination of the fair, “;My Hawaii”; student authors participate in a public reading followed by a reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at ING DIRECT cafe.

The project is an annual middle school writing contest that invites students to write a story, poem or essay to reflect their thoughts and feelings about what makes Hawaii special to them.

A silent auction with books, art and special nature tours will take place at ING DIRECT cafe, located at 1958 Kalakaua Ave., beginning Dec. 7. Funds raised will support the 2010 writing contest. For more information on the project, visit www.hawaii conservation.org.

Back-to-back vampire mania

Stop howling at the moon, teenage vampires, and listen up. We know you've been biting yourselves in anticipation of “;Twilight: New Moon”; opening in theaters on Friday, with the hard-core among you hitting the midnight showings tomorrow — how appropriate is that? — but pay attention to your local theater listings.

Many Consolidated theaters also are screening the original “;Twilight”; around 9 p.m. so you can see both movies back to back.

Next day is Furlough Friday, after all; it's not like you can't sleep in. And afterward you can say, “;Those vampire movies totally sucked!”; and mean it as a compliment.

Etcetera ...
