A short leash teaches dogs how to heel

Question: How can I get my dog to stop pulling on her leash?

Answer: Talk to your dog while walking her. Keep the leash short so she stays close to your side and more mindful of your presence. Pulling on the leash only teaches her that pulling gets results. So if she pulls, stop walking. Resume walking once she settles. Avoid distractions, such as crowded places, while training. Training collars such as gentle leaders and harnesses may help. Most important is to be consistent and reward good behavior with treats and praise.
