POSTED: Tuesday, November 10, 2009

The Department of Transportation will start a yearlong project this month to make Kalanianaole Highway near Makapuu safer for motorists.

The department will shut down Kalanianaole Highway beginning Nov. 29, including full night closure and daytime contra-flow lanes, for retaining wall construction.

The $7.8 million project is expected to be completed by the end of 2010.

The highway will be closed 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays between the upper Makapuu Lookout parking lot and the Makapuu Beach Park parking entrance.

Transportation crews will use alternating single lane closures 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays in either direction in the construction area.

The project includes safety improvements to the area, constructing a rockfall impact barrier, stabilizing the slope, reconstructing pavement and installing electrical cable sand conduits.

The department will put up eight electronic message boards before the lane closures are in effect to allow drivers time to plan alternate routes.

Motorists are advised to use caution. For more information go to the department's Web site at www.hawaii.gov/dot.
