Wahine fall to Boise in soccer

Junior Mari Punzal scored the first goal for the University of Hawaii soccer team (6-11-1, 2-5-0 WAC) 13 minutes into the game, but the Rainbow Wahine ended up losing to the Boise State Broncos (9-6-4, 4-3-0) 2-1 yesterday in Boise, Idaho.

Boise State senior Kaylea Perenon scored on an assist by Chelsea Robinson and Maureen Fitzgerald. Brandy Hickox later scored on a penalty kick.

UH senior Britta Bourne had three shots on goal, and Kristyn Shapka had an assist.

 

Hilo clinches volleyball title

No. 16 Hawaii-Hilo, getting 15 kills from senior hitter Josimara Pinheiro, clinched the Pacific West volleyball title last night via a 25-15, 25-19, 25-18 win over Chaminade at McCabe Gym.

It was the seventh consecutive win for the Vulcans (23-1, 13-1 PWC). Senior libero Laura Rodriguez had four aces and senior middle Morgan Bonney was in on five blocks in addition to notching nine kills for UHH.

The Silverswords (4-20, 2-12) were led by freshman hitter Kylee Pedro's five kills.

The Vulcans can win the PWC title outright with a victory over defending conference champion Brigham Young-Hawaii (13-11, 9-4).

 

McCullough honored

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Lauran McCullough was named a member of ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District College Division Team for Region VIII in soccer.

McCullough, a defender, helped her teammates allow opponents only 7.2 shots per game. The Seasiders are 12-3 overall.

» UH-Hilo (3-10-4, 2-6-3 PacWest) could not fight off the Academy of Art (2-13-2, 2-7-2 PacWest), as the Vulcans lost 2-0 yesterday in Hilo. AAU sophomore Olivia Dupon scored the first point crossing to the right corner, then later scored with freshman Cormela Doerr assisting to pop it over UHH's goalie in the first half.

» Ayala Eduardo and Omar Garcia each scored a goal in the first half to help the UH-Hilo men (9-8, 8-3) over Academy of Art (4-12, 1-10) yesterday in Hilo.
