Twelve students who are descendants of World War II Japanese-American veterans received Eiro Yamada Memorial Scholarships, established by the Yamada-Scott Family Foundation. The students were selected based on their essays about the experiences of Japanese-American World War II veterans and their continuing impact on subsequent generation. They include Kimberly Emi Ikuma Naguwa of Honolulu, who is attending the University of Puget Sound; and Garrett Mitsuo Yamamoto of Kailua, who is studying at the University of North Dakota.

Chelsea Iwami's painting entitled “;Fire”; was named the overall best-in-show in the fourth annual contest of The National Arts Program in Honolulu. Iwami's painting was selected from 83 works submitted by 56 city employees and family members. She won a $300 grand prize.
