Five big plays from Hawaii's 42-17 loss to Fresno State

Chosen and described by the Star-Bulletin's Dave Reardon.

1. BLOCKED
The Situation:
Hawaii 0, Fresno State 0, 12:44 remaining, first quarter, Hawaii ball, fourth and 4 at the Fresno State 25
The Play:
On the game's opening drive, Hawaii sets up for a field goal. Fresno State's Ben Jacobs blocks Scott Enos' low kick. Jacobs, who later intercepts a pass, picks up the ball and runs to the Hawaii 8. It is Fresno State's NCAA-best 46th block since 2002.
The Impact:
It amounts to a 10-point swing as RB Lonyae Miller scores from 3 yards out on second down. Fresno State takes early control and scores the first 21 points.
Hawaii coach Greg McMackin:
“;We had a close encounter with the same thing (at Louisiana Tech). We worked on it and worked on it and they blocked it. So obviously we didn't learn it enough.”;

2. PICKED
The Situation:
Fresno State 14, Hawaii 0, 13:04 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, first and goal at Fresno State 10
The Play:
Hawaii QB Bryant Moniz passes into the end zone for SB Kealoha Pilares. Fresno State SS Moses Harris intercepts.
The Impact:
Fresno State takes over at its own 20 with a touchback. It mounts a 10-play drive capped by Ryan Colburn's 17-yard touchdown pass to Devon Wylie.
Moniz:
“;It was on me, just a misread. I didn't see the guy out there. Kealoha beat his man and that was the spot he was going to be. I threw it out there, but they had another guy out there.”;

3. MUFFED
The Situation:
Fresno State 21, Hawaii 3, 1:39 remaining, second quarter, Fresno State ball, fourth and 5 at Fresno State 36
The Play:
Robert Malone punts 34 yards to the Hawaii 30, where Hawaii's Ryan Henry drops the ball. It is recovered by Fresno State's Bobby Shepard.
The Impact:
Instead of a chance to score right before halftime and take momentum into the break, Hawaii absorbs another Fresno State touchdown four plays later, as Colburn throws a 17-yard scoring pass to Chastin West with 11 seconds left. Fresno State leads 28-3 at the break and is never seriously threatened after.
McMackin:
“;It put a lot more pressure on our quarterback.”;

4. MORE OF THE SAME
The Situation:
Fresno State 28, Hawaii 3, 11:05 remaining, third quarter, Fresno State ball, second and 4 at Hawaii 34
The Play:
Fresno State third-string RB Robbie Rouse runs through a hole on the left and goes 34 yards for a touchdown.
The Impact:
This play caps a 68-yard drive to open the third quarter, and Fresno State continues to methodically dominate the game. For the night, Fresno State rushes for 277 yards and passes for 135 as Colburn completes 12 of 14 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
Colburn:
“;Game manager is my job.”;

5. DROUGHT ENDER
The Situation:
Fresno State 42, Hawaii 3, 7:25 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball, second and goal at Fresno State 6
The Play:
Moniz passes to SB Greg Salas, who fumbles at the 1 and into the Fresno State end zone. SB Jon Medeiros recovers for Hawaii's first touchdown after seven quarters without one.
The Impact:
Moniz is credited with the first of two touchdown passes. It's too late for Hawaii to get back into the game, but it salvages a little more pride when Richard Torres recovers the ensuing onside kick and Hawaii scores again on Moniz's 4-yard pass to WR Rodney Bradley.
UH offensive coordinator Ron Lee:
“;(Moniz's) first game against a good team. And he'll get better.”;
