Murphy's fundraiser to help SOS

Murphy's Bar and Grill will hold a downtown hoolaulea on Oct. 21 to raise money for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association's Save Our Sports fundraising drive.

Organizers are hoping to raise $100,000 and attract 3,000 people to the event, which will be held from 5:30 to 10 p.m. on Merchant Street and Nuuanu Avenue.

Live entertainment and food booths are among the featured attractions.

SOS was formed to help offset budget cuts to high school sports.

McMackin speaks at weekly luncheon

Hawaii football coach Greg McMackin is the guest speaker at the combined weekly meeting of the Na Koa Football Club and Honolulu Quarterback Club tomorrow.

The meeting at The Willows restaurant starts at 11:30 a.m.



BYUH captures Hawaii-Hilo race

Lacey Krout placed second and Katherine Buxton, Kelsey Elder, Allison Shamrell and Danielle Anderson finished in the top 10 to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a victory at the Hawaii-Hilo 6K Invitational women's cross country race yesterday.

Hawaii Pacific's Quinn Horochuk won the race in 25 minutes, 34 seconds to lead the Sea Warriors to a second-place finish.

Hawaii-Hilo took third, followed by Victor Valley (Calif.) in fourth and Chaminade in fifth.

» Spencer Davila won the Hawaii-Hilo 6K men's race in 20:45 to lead BYUH to a first-place finish.

Dany Malley took second place, as did his Hawaii Pacific team.

Hawaii-Hilo finished third, with Victor Valley in fourth and Chaminade in last place out of the five teams.


UHH topples Dixie State

Eduardo Gutierrez scored in the 89th minute to give Hawaii-Hilo a 1-0 men's soccer victory over Dixie State (Utah) at St. George, Utah, yesterday.

The Vulcans improved to 5-6 overall and 4-1 in the PacWest. The Red Storm dropped to 3-5-1 and 1-4.

» Meghan Fuller scored three goals to lead Hawaii Pacific past Notre Dame de Namur 4-1 in women's soccer at Belmont, Calif.

Katrina Torres also scored for the Sea Warriors (6-3-1, 4-2 PacWest).

The Argonauts dropped to 3-9-1 and 3-2-1.

» Arturo Gomez scored two goals to lead Notre Dame de Namur past Hawaii Pacific 3-0 in men's soccer yesterday at Belmont, Calif.

The Argonauts improved to 4-8-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the PacWest. The Sea Warriors fell to 6-2-1 and 3-2-1.

» Sam Akinaka scored in the 54th minute to give Brigham Young-Hawaii a 1-0 men's soccer win over Academy of Art yesterday in San Francisco.

The Seasiders improved to 3-6-1 and 2-3-1 in the PacWest.

The Urban Knights dropped to 4-8-1 and 1-6.

» Wendy Stratford scored in the 107th minute to give Dixie State a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Hawaii-Hilo in women's soccer yesterday.

Emily Lambert had the lone goal for the Vulcans (3-6-2, 2-2-1 PacWest).

The Red Storm improved to 6-3 and 5-0 in the conference.

» Five players — Natalie Cude, Natasha Aiono, Sadie Simon, Chloe Ence and Margaret Sekona — scored for Brigham Young-Hawaii in a 5-0 women's soccer win over Academy of Art yesterday at San Francisco.

The Seasiders improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the PacWest.

The Urban Knights dropped to 0-10-2 and 0-5-2.


Chaminade trips Westminster

Courtney Lorusso pounded 21 kills and hit .356 to lead Chaminade past Westminster (Utah) 25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 25-17 in women's volleyball yesterday.

The Silverswords improved to 3-15 and the Griffins dropped to 6-15.
