Pac-Five QB gets creative

It was a case of double trouble — two forward passes on one play.

On Saturday, Pac-Five quarterback P.J. Minaya tossed a pass toward the left side of the field. It was immediately batted by Word of Life defensive end Bryson Mook, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound junior. The ball rebounded back to Minaya.

The quick-thinking slinger still had an open teammate downfield, so he hurled the ball again, but it fell incomplete.

Legally, only one forward pass is permitted in a play, but no flag was thrown.

Veteran referee Jim Beavers explained the the rule to the crew at the weekly officials meeting.

“;They didn't do it right, and when I told them, they were crushed. But it's something to learn from,”; Beavers said.

Molokai states its case as best

Nearly two weeks ago, Kamehameha-Maui and Molokai met in a match at the Warriors' gym between the Maui Interscholastic League's top teams in Divisions I and II.

Molokai rallied for a 23-25, 27-25, 25-22 win, but there's some confusion whether this was an exhibition match or a scrimmage. KS-Maui called in officials to work the match, and score was kept — two indications that this was not a typical scrimmage. It was, after all, an unofficial version of an MIL championship match.
