Facts of fishing focus of festival

Find out everything you ever wanted to know about fish Sunday at the fourth annual Hawaii Fishing & Seafood Festival at Pier 38. The free event will feature tours of the fish auction facility and cooking demos using fish and seafood for healthy fare.

Restaurants such as Poke Stop, Nico's, Tokkuri-Tei, Da Hukilau and Lum's Crab will offer seafood dishes as well.

There also will be fishing workshops, a tour of fishing vessels and demos of lure and fish-pole making, casting and, of course, fishing. A gyotaku auction, keiki hula, taiko drumming and a performance by Imua round out entertainment.

The festival, a fundraiser for the Pacific Island Fisheries Group, runs 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit fishtoday.org.

 

Macrobiotic chef offers classes

Learn how eating a macrobiotic diet can affect health with longtime macrobiotic teacher and counselor Warren Kramer.

Kramer and local chef Leslie Ashburn will offer lectures and cooking classes Oct. 16 to 18 at Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave.

Local chefs get spotlight on show

Tune in to a new local food show premiering noon Saturday on KFVE.

“;Top Hawaii Chefs,”; a weekly half-hour program, kicks off with a feature of 3660 on the Rise. Subsequent shows will highlight Bento and Banquets by Bernard, Nuuanu Okazu-ya and Dream Dinners.

“;Top Hawaii Chefs”; repeats 6 p.m. Sundays.

 

Cake decorating class at library

Kahuku Public and School Library is offering a couple of food-related programs this month. Both free talks, for ages 12 and up, will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room. Registration is requested for the Oct. 20 demo. Call 293-8935.

New York chef cooks for KCC

Local boy Tony Liu, now chef of Morandi Restaurant in New York, will serve as guest chef at Ho'okipa 2009, the annual fundraiser for Kapiolani Community College's culinary program.

The Oct. 16 event at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel includes cocktails at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $300 reserved or $100 grazing. Tables of 10 are $3,000, $5,000 or $10,000. Call 734-9544.

Liu is a graduate of KCC's program and of the Culinary Institute of America.
