1. BIG PUSH

THE SITUATION:

Hawaii 3, LaTech 0, 2:39 remaining, first quarter, LaTech ball, second and goal at Hawaii 3

THE PLAY:

RB Daniel Porter scores on a handoff, capping a 72-yard drive. LaTech never needs third down during the 11-play march.

THE IMPACT:

LaTech takes the lead it keeps the rest of the game. Hawaii has no answer for LaTech's running game, which piles up 352 yards. Porter gets 160 himself, more than matching his combined 134 in LaTech's first three games.

PORTER:

“;We saw on film that they weren't good tacklers and we took advantage of it.”;

2. DEAD ZONE

THE SITUATION:

LaTech 10, Hawaii 3, 0:16 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, third and goal at LaTech 1

THE PLAY:

After two failed rushing attempts from the LaTech 2 and 1, Hawaii calls timeout, then QB Greg Alexander tries to lob a pass to Royce Pollard in the back corner of the end zone. CB Deon Young is there for the coverage and the pass is incomplete.

THE IMPACT:

Hawaii's red zone woes continue, and it is forced to kick a field goal and go into halftime trailing 10-6 instead of tied.

ALEXANDER:

“;It was something we worked on all week and knew we had to get better and we didn't.”;

3. Tipped and picked

THE SITUATION:

LaTech 10, Hawaii 6, 14:49 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, first and 10 at Hawaii 26

THE PLAY:

On the first play from scrimmage of the second half, DT Adrian Logan tips Alexander's pass and it is intercepted by DE Kwame Jordan. LaTech takes over at the Hawaii 26.

THE IMPACT:

Seven plays later, Porter runs in from the 1, and LaTech improves its lead to 17-6. Hawaii, which turns the ball over three times, never gets back in the game.

LATECH COACH DEREK DOOLEY:

“;The plus-three takeaways were the key to the game. I knew we'd have a chance if we were able to do that.”;

4. ALEXANDER OUT

THE SITUATION:

LaTech 24, Hawaii 6, 0:56 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, third and 10 at LaTech 42

THE PLAY:

Alexander scrambles, finds an opening around left end and after a 5-yard gain is hit hard by LB Adrien Cole.

THE IMPACT:

Alexander suffers a sprained knee on the play, and is replaced by No. 2 QB Bryant Moniz. Alexander is expected to miss at least the next game, Oct. 10 against Fresno State.

ALEXANDER:

“;The guy hit me pretty good. I think my foot just got caught in the turf, but other than that it was a clean play.”;

5. NO PAYDIRT

THE SITUATION:

LaTech 27, Hawaii 6, 6:20 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball, first and 10 at LaTech 40

THE PLAY:

Moniz completes a short pass to SB Greg Salas, who finds a lane on the right sideline and appears destined for the goal line. But he fumbles at the 1, the ball goes into the end zone, and DB Chad Boyd smothers it for a touchback.

THE IMPACT:

This took away any faint hope Hawaii had of coming back and stripped the offense of a chance to leave with some dignity. This was the first time UH went without a TD since a 69-3 loss at Boise in 2004, a span of 62 games.

SALAS:

“;Couldn't get into sync. In practice, we prepared exactly for what they did and we just didn't execute.”;
