Kamehameha cruises

By

POSTED: Sunday, September 27, 2009

After a week off to enjoy a big win over Punahou, No. 5 Kamehameha got right back to work.

Ryan Ho rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as the Warriors routed Damien 36-0 last night at Kunuiakea Stadium.

The Warriors (5-1, 2-1 Interscholastic League of Honolulu) won their second in a row to remain tied with Saint Louis in the ILH standings.

“;Everybody was focused,”; Kamehameha coach David Stant said. “;At any given night, you can lose, and I think our boys found that out against 'Iolani. They've learned that you have to win every single play.”;

Ho had his usual solid night, leading the Warriors to a 22-0 halftime lead on touchdown runs of 1, 5 and 20 yards. In the second half, he gave way to backup Jason Muraoka, who ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

“;Felt good. The O-line blocked good,”; Muraoka said. “;We just had to be committed to our team and not take anybody lightly.”;

Kamehameha's defense overwhelmed Damien in the first quarter. Of the Monarchs' 13 offensive plays, six went for negative yards. By the end of the quarter, Ho had outgained the entire Damien team by 115 yards.

But it wasn't all rosy for the Warriors. Other than Ho, who tore up the Monarchs for 134 yards and three touchdowns on only 12 carries, Kamehameha couldn't muster much else on offense.

Quarterback T.C. Campbell was just 5-for-13 for 61 yards and was intercepted by Tyler Tamayo on Kamehameha's final drive of the half. The Warriors also had two drives end on failed fourth-down attempts and were whistled for six holding calls.

“;We were bad,”; Stant said. “;All they were going to do is key on Ryan and that should open up our pass. We didn't execute and we've got to be able to come out and throw the ball in those situations.”;

The defense kept things under control, frustrating Monarchs quarterback Marcus Kaanoi all half. Beau Yap had one of the Warriors' two sacks and Kaanoi completed just three of 11 passes for 12 yards and had minus-49 yards rushing. Damien (1-5, 1-3) had minus-37 yards for the half.
