The Sacred Hearts Academy's Ohana—alumnae, families and friends—turned out in droves for the school's scholarship fundraising gala and to celebrate the school's 100th anniversary Wednesday night at the Sheraton Waikiki. The school was founded 50 years after 10 Sisters of the Sacred Hearts came to Hawaii in 1859. About 960 guests applauded an evening filled with music and tributes to this year's distinguished honorees. Besides the Sisters, honorees were alums Sister Agnelle Ching, Elizabeth Chong and Ann Marie Kirk. Judging from the applause, Ann Marie was the crowd favorite, and she showed why in her lively, entertaining mahalo speech. Title sponsor Dr. Larry Tseu also was honored and gave a brief talk. Honorary chairs were Lee and June Webber. ; Bishop Larry Silva, Gov. Linda Lingle, Mayor Mufi Hannemann, Head of School Betty White and the school's board chairman, Michael Browning, spoke during the program, emceed by Carole Kai. Carole went to McKinley, but she said when noted voice teacher Neva Rego calls on you, you show up. Neva's outstanding entertainment lineup included Anita Hall, Jordan Segundo, Kawika Maguire, Marlene Sai, Les Caballos and Cathy Foy-Mahi. Neva and Cathy are Sacred Hearts girls and former distinguished honorees. Also deserving tribute is the school's Select Choir with their fresh, clean, young voices and the many polite students who guided people to their seats and assisted with the silent auction. Hannemann and Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona made the rounds from table to table, shaking hands. They could possibly find themselves running against each other for governor before too long ...
