'Iolani puts the clamps on Pac-Five

By

POSTED: Sunday, September 20, 2009

Pac-Five's high-octane, run-and-shoot offense ran into a brick wall known as the 'Iolani defense.

Seali'i Epenesa had one of the Raiders' four sacks and 'Iolani held P.J. Minaya, who had 25 passing touchdowns in five games, without a score in a 31-3 victory last night at Kunuiakea Stadium.

Alex Matsunami rushed for two touchdowns and Greg Lum scored returning a fumble forced by Epenesa as No. 7 'Iolani (5-1, 3-0 Interscholastic League of Honolulu) is the only remaining undefeated team in ILH play.

“;Our defensive effort was really outstanding,”; 'Iolani coach Wendell Look said. “;But not to take anything away from our effort, they were a little short-handed. They didn't have all their weapons.”;

Receiver Darin Kamealoha didn't play after injuring his ankle in a win over Damien last week and Minaya left the game early in the fourth quarter after Epenesa sacked him. Minaya fumbled the ball on the play and Lum returned it 10 yards for 'Iolani's third touchdown in a 5-minute span that blew the game open.

“;I was just doing my job as a (defensive) lineman,”; Epenesa said. “;All 11 guys on the field have to do their job and we did that tonight.”;

Minaya, who was averaging more than 330 passing yards a game, finished 22-for-31 for 206 yards, but the only points Pac-Five (4-2, 1-2) managed came on a 39-yard field goal by Brendan Sagucio.

Minaya threw for 189 yards to Jarrett Arakawa's 71 in the first half, but the Wolfpack squandered two scoring chances from the 1-yard line. The Raiders stopped Darius Anderson on fourth down in the first quarter and forced a missed field goal by Sagucio in the second quarter after Pac-Five was inches away from a score.

“;Any time you can stop a team from scoring inside the red zone is a big plus,”; Look said. “;And especially with them because they're so explosive and the kind of offensive production they have been putting up has been unreal.”;

Arakawa found his rhythm in the second half, completing six of his first seven passes. An 11-yard strike to Kevin Barayuga increased the lead to 17-3 and Matsunami's second touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter put the Raiders up three touchdowns.

“;We made the most of our opportunities,”; Look said. “;We shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times, but again, our defense gave us great field position and Jarrett is smart enough to know when to take chances and when to take what the defense gives him.”;

Arakawa finished an efficient 16-for-25 for 142 yards and Trevyn Tulonghari led the receiving corps with nine catches for 71 yards. Pac-Five's backup quarterbacks Jack Foster and Logan Murakami combined to finish 5-for-14 for 50 yards and interception in the fourth quarter.

Receiving
        Christian Estabillo only caught one pass in Kapolei's win over Waipahu, but his 20-yard TD reception in overtime made the difference.
