Big Isle man to get mental evaluation

HILO » A Big Island man charged with raping and murdering the 5-year-old daughter of his girlfriend will undergo a psychiatric evaluation by three doctors.

The evaluation led District Judge Barbara Takase on Monday to grant a second delay in a preliminary hearing for 30-year-old Anthony Serges Poulin. The hearing is now scheduled for Oct. 13.

Poulin is being held in lieu of $1 million bail after being charged with murder, sexual assault and abuse of a family/ household member.

Javieanne Win, a first-grader at Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary School, was pronounced dead Sept. 6 after police and paramedics responded to a call of an unresponsive child in a filled bathtub.

Officials say Javieanne's mother, Jennifer Abiley, was not home at the time.

Dinner argument leads to 2 arrests

Police arrested a 35-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man Monday night in Waimanalo for allegedly assaulting a 16-year-old boy for eating too much food at a family dinner.

Police said the woman allegedly repeatedly hit the boy for eating too much of the food.

The man, also a relative, then allegedly choked the boy until he nearly passed out, police said.

Police arrested the two after the 7:30 p.m. incident on suspicion of second- and third-degree assault.

They each were released on $100 bail.

Suspect wields gun in robbery

Police are looking for a man who allegedly robbed a 36-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman in the airport area early yesterday morning.

Police said the victims were walking to their car at about 3:55 a.m. yesterday when they found the suspect sitting in the front passenger seat of their car.

They confronted the man, but he then allegedly pointed a handgun at them, demanding the woman's purse and the man's car keys.

He then allegedly struck the woman with his handgun and took her purse. The man dropped his keys and ran. The suspect fled in their vehicle with the purse.

At about 4:20 a.m. yesterday, police recovered the abandoned car in Kalihi and found a plastic bag containing a crystal substance resembling methamphetamine, police said.

The man faces arrest on suspicion of first-degree robbery and third-degree promotion of dangerous drugs.

California man charged in drug case

Big Island police officers have arrested and charged a 35-year-old California man with methamphetamine trafficking.

Kauiokuualoha Hirakawa of La Mesa, Calif., was arrested Monday after Hilo vice officers served a search warrant at his Banyan Drive hotel room and recovered four ounces of crystal methamphetamine.

Police said the drugs have a wholesale value of about $16,000.

Hirakawa was charged with methamphetamine trafficking in the first degree and possession of drug paraphernalia.
