Penn title bout in December

UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn will defend his title against Diego Sanchez on Dec. 12 at UFC 107 at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the bout yesterday in a video posted on Penn's Web site.

Penn (14-5-1) is coming off a fourth-round submission victory over Kenny Florian in August. Sanchez (21-2) defeated Clay Guida by split decision in his last fight.

The card is also expected to feature a light heavyweight bout between Quinton “;Rampage”; Jackson and Rashad Evans.

 

Hawaii takes third at USGA nationals

Team Hawaii posted a three-round total of 447 to finish third at the 2009 USGA Women's State Team Championships at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Hawaii had never finished higher than 10th previously.

Xyra Suyetsugu, an assistant golf coach at the University of Hawaii, was the team's top player with a 224. Kacie Komoto — the youngest player in the field at 14 years old — added a 228 and Cyd Okino a 240.

Georgia won with a 4-over 436 while Alabama was runner-up at 445.

Hawaii began the day tied for second with South Carolina.

 

BYUH volleyball drops 2 matches

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team lost to Sonoma State and Western Washington in the Central Washington Invitational yesterday in Ellensburg, Wash.

The Seasiders opened the day with a 25-11, 25-17, 25-13 defeat by unbeaten Sonoma. Freshman Kylee Nawahine posted nine kills to lead BYUH.

No. 21 Western Washington dropped BYUH to 3-2 for the season with a 25-23, 25-23, 25-21 victory in the second match of the day. Junior Roseanne Vea put away 12 kills to lead the Seasiders.

 

UHH baseball tryouts Sunday

Tryouts for the Hawaii-Hilo 2010 baseball team start at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the UHH baseball field.

Candidates must take a physical that morning at 9 a.m. Call coach Joey Estrella at 974-7700 for more information.
