Dance students and enthusiasts can learn the art of bharata natyam dance in two weeks of classes at Kapiolani Community College.

Sessions will begin Wednesday and run through Sept. 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, or starting Tuesday and continuing Tuesdays and Thursdays through Sept. 17 at the same times. Cost is $112.50 for five classes; $90 for four.

The classical dance form originated in southern India and incorporates percussive footwork and hand gestures.

Class instructor Sonja Sironen spent 11 years studying in Sri Lanka and India and obtained a degree in the art form. She also has a bachelor's degree in dance and a master's degree in dance ethnology from the University of Hawaii.
