Man seriously injured in parachute accident in Mokuleia

An 18-year-old North Shore man was seriously injured when the parachute he was using off a cliff in Mokuleia spun out of control.

Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the man lifted off the roughly 2,000-foot-high cliff, spiraled down about 200 feet and hit the cliff and landed against the cliffside.

The Fire Department received the call at about 6:30 p.m., and rescue personnel hiked up to the location known as “;Climbing Wall,”; a half mile past Camp Erdman, Seelig said.

Firefighters treated the man, then placed him on a C-spine board and in a rescue basket, then airlifted him by fire helicopter at 7:50 p.m. to an ambulance waiting at the base of the cliff.

He was taken in serious condition to a Honolulu hospital.

27 Moanalua students injured in school bus crash

Twenty-seven Moanalua Middle School students were taken to two hospitals yesterday morning after a vehicle struck a school bus off campus.

The accident occurred before 7 a.m., according to school Principal Lisa Nagamine. After the accident, the students were taken back to Moanalua Middle by another school bus. Upon arrival, school officials contacted parents and emergency personnel.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the Honolulu Emergency Services Department, said one male student complained of head pain and dizziness. Oahu Transit Services Inc. sent a city bus that took 15 students to one hospital and 12 students to another hospital.

One of the students was listed in serious condition, Cheplic said, while the others were listed as stable.
