Restaurants offer Labor Day special

Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar and d.k Steak House are presenting special menus for the Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4 to 7.

» At d.k the restaurant is offering a Maine lobster and rib eye steak dinner for two that includes a 1 1/4-pound steamed lobster each and a 22-ounce, 30-day dry-aged steak to share. The meal includes a chocolate chip bread pudding ala mode.

Cost is $75 per person. Call the steakhouse, located at the Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa, at 931-6280.

» The four Sansei restaurants are running “;Seafood Festival 2009”; with appetizer specials, a complete meal entree and a family-style dinner for two.

Appetizers include Shellfish Cocktail Bouquet featuring Maine lobster, fresh oysters and clams, crab claws, opihi, jumbo shrimp and sashimi with a trio of sauces ($38); Chinatown Jumbo Crispy Shrimp ($12.95); and Hawaiian Salt-Cured King Salmon Nicoise Salad ($8.95), with 'Nalo greens and sea asparagus. The entree includes Roasted Garlic Dungeness Crab and jasmine fried rice ($50).

The family-style dinner features Crispy Wok-Fried Whole Fish of snapper in black bean sauce. It is a complete meal that features the chocolate-chip bread pudding “;ala mode”; for dessert ($65). Call 931-6286.

 

Enjoy Italian food at Sept. 13 benefit

Take “;A Culinary Tour of Italia”; at Mariposa Restaurant on Sept. 13 at the seventh annual benefit of the Soroptimist International's Waikiki and Central Oahu groups.

The event, from 4 to 8 p.m. and part of the “;Taste of the Arts”; fundraiser, will feature cuisine by executive chef Marc Anthony, prizes and a silent auction.

Dance classes help food bank

Trade food for dance classes Saturday at Hawaii Foodbank's food drive at the Palama Settlement gymnasium.

Hyper Squad instructors will offer lessons in jazz, hip-hop and break dancing for a minimum of five cans of food. Sessions will run 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. for ages 7 and up. All levels welcome. Visit http://www.hawaiifoodbank.org/page16.aspx.

 

Mango will star at market festival

Haleiwa Farmers' Market pays tribute to a classic summer fruit with a Mango Mania Festival on Sunday.

The highlight of the festival will be the Magnificent Mango Recipe Contest, comprising three categories: sweets, main dishes and condiments.

Cooking demonstrations will be hosted by chef John Armstrong of 21 Degrees North and Paradise Cafe's Nitai Bishop. Plant expert Heidi Bornhorst will be on hand, Hawaiian Electric Co. will offer safety tips and children can learn about paniolo roping and caring for the ocean.

The 50 booths in the Green Market will offer food with a mango theme, such as mango butter, smoothies, pizza, all-natural shave ice, cheesecake and burgers with mango salsa.

The festival runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kamehameha Highway and Leong Bypass near Haleiwa Beach Park. Those entering the recipe contest should drop off entries from 8 to 9 a.m.; awards will be presented at noon. Call 388-9696.

 

Class includes tastings, wines

Watch how chefs create magic in the kitchen during a cooking demonstration at 3660 on the Rise that includes a tasting and wine pairing.

The menu: Crispy Fried Scallop Mousse, Poached Local Baby Romaine-Wrapped Wild Salmon, Hanger Steak “;Wafu Style”; and Creme Brulee.

The class is at 6 p.m. Sept. 10. Cost is $65. Call 737-1177.
