HPU softball brings in talent

The Hawaii Pacific softball team signed three players yesterday, all of them from high schools in Hawaii.

Melissa Awa, Caira Pires and Malia Killiam will join the program for its upcoming season.

Awa is a true freshman out of Kamehameha, where she helped the Warriors to the state title. Awa was a third-team all state selection by the Star-Bulletin last year.

HPU head coach Bryan Nakasone expects Awa to be used as a utility player and hopes to use her speed at every position.

Pires, a third baseman, comes from Kalaheo, where she was All-OIA in each of the past four years.

Killiam was the BIIF player of the year as a catcher for Baldwin this past season.

The Sea Warriors made it to an NCAA Division II regional championship game last season, losing to Dixie State. HPU finished the season with 42 wins.
