City awards $8.3M for park

The city has awarded $8.3 million in contracts for construction of a new gym, play courts and parking lot at Ewa Mahiko District Park on the site of the old Ewa Sugar Mill on Renton Road.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann said construction will include a 10,440-square-foot gymnasium, multipurpose building, two basketball courts, four tennis courts, two volleyball courts and a 235-stall parking lot, according to a release.

Kurt Fevella, chairman of the Ewa Neighborhood Board, said, “;These facilities will give our young people and the entire community a gathering place for their sports and recreation activities.”;

Construction by 57 Builders Ltd. will begin in early 2010 and be completed in late 2011. Yamasato Fujiwara Higa & Associates designed the project.
