Police look for driver who tried to run over officer

Homicide detectives are investigating a case in which a Honolulu police officer fired his gun after the driver of a car tried to run him down in the Best Buy parking lot in Pearl City about 12:05 a.m. yesterday, police said.

The officer was sent to the Best Buy store at 98-051 Kamehameha Highway about midnight to investigate a report of suspicious activity in the parking lot, police said.

As the officer arrived, he saw a man on a bicycle ride out of the loading dock area and leave, police said.

The officer then saw a late-model Toyota sedan with its engine running at the loading dock.

As the officer walked toward the car, the driver tried to run him down, police said. The officer jumped out of the path of the car and fired one shot at the car's driver, police said.

Police were searching for the car and driver yesterday, and the bicyclist.

Police have opened up a case involving first-degree attempted murder, second-degree attempted burglary, and refusing to stop a motor vehicle.
