Synopsis: Like seed banks for rare plants, so are the audio archives of Hawaiian language for those learning today. Therein lie many things to aid in the revitalization of the language. We have only to recognize the value of these resources and begin to utilize them more fully.

I ka wā ma mua, 'o ka'u 'oihana, 'o ia nō ka pi'i 'ana ma uka o ke kuahiwi no ka mālama 'ana aku i nā lā'au 'ōiwi kāka'ikahi loa e koe nei ma O'ahu nei. He hana hoihoi a 'olu'olu loa ia a 'ike akula nō ko'u mau maka i ka 'iu o ke Ko'olau, ka uluwehi o ka wao akua, ka ululā'au kāohi ao o uka, ke kumu ho'i o ka wai ma'ema'e e kena ai ka 'ono a ka pu'u. Ma o ka'u lawelawe 'ana i ia hana, kupu mai nei kahi mana'o, 'o ia ho'i, penei: Ua 'ano like ke kūlana kūpiliki'i o ka 'ōlelo Hawai'i me ko kēlā mau lā'au 'ōiwi ke ho'ohālike 'ia a'e, a ua like nō ho'i ka mea e ola hou ai ua mau mea waiwai lā a i 'elua.

Ma 'ane'i, 'eā, e huli aku nō ko kākou nānā 'ana i ia lā'au i kapa 'ia 'o ke kauila. He kumu lā'au laha loa ia i ka wā kahiko. Nani kona 'o'ole'a a me kona kaumaha, a no ia mea nō, ua makemake nui 'ia ke kauila no ka hana 'ana i nā mea he nui. 'O ka ihe 'oe, 'o ke i'e kuku kapa 'oe, 'o ka lā'au e pa'a ai ka mōlī kākau uhi, a me ia mea aku, ia mea aku e pono ai ka nohona o ka po'e kahiko. I ka hiki 'ana mai nō na'e o ka 'oihana hānai pipi a me nā nāhelehele o nā 'āina 'ē mai, ua hele a pilikia kona mau wahi noho. Emi loa maila ka nui o nā kumu kauila ma nā mokupuni a pau. I kēia mau lā, ma O'ahu nei, aia ka heluna o nā kumu kauila e koe mai nei ma lalo o ke kanaono. Auē ke emi ē!

I aha auane'i kā kākou hana e māhuahua ai ke kauila a laha? Holo mai nei ka mana'o o nā kānaka mālama 'āina e 'ohi'ohi i nā 'ano'ano o nā kumu kauila e koe mai nei. 'O kekahi hapa o ia mau 'ano'ano, ua ho'okupu 'ia, ho'oulu 'ia i loko o ka hale malu, a kanu hou 'ia nō i loko o ka nahele me ka mana'olana e ola hou ana nō, ma lalo nō na'e o ka mālama 'ana a kānaka. 'O kekahi hapa aku o nā 'ano'ano, aia nō ke mālama 'ia ala i loko o kekahi waihona mālama 'ano'ano. Ma ka 'ōlelo haole, kapa 'ia kēia mea he “seed bank”. He waiwai maoli nō ia, no ka mea, inā e kupu mai kekahi pilikia kūikawā, e la'a me ka hiki 'ana mai o kekahi 'iniseka hou ma ko kākou 'āina aloha nei, a ho'opau 'ia nā kumu kauila a pau, aia nō ke waiho lā ko lākou mau 'ano'ano no kākou e kanu ai. Hiki nō ke ho'omau aku i ka ho'oulu 'ana, a 'a'ole nō e nalo loa ke kauila. E ho'i nō na'e i kona kūlana ikaika i 'ike 'ia ai ma mua.

I kēia mau lā, ua 'ike 'ia ke kūlana kūpiliki'i o ka 'ōlelo Hawai'i. 'O kona emi loa 'ana mai, ua lilo ia he hoa like no ke kauila. I kēia pule a'e, e ho'ohālike 'ia ka mo'olelo ho'oniniu pu'uwai o ka 'ōlelo Hawai'i me ko ke kauila.
