Maui undefeated in Big League

Riley Beeson's two-run single in the top of the seventh inning gave Maui a 5-3 win over San Jose, Calif., in the Little League Big League West Regional at Bremerton, Wash. Maui (3-0) has clinched the top seed in its pool and finish pool play against Las Vegas in the tournament for 16 to 18 year-olds. Earlier this week, Maui shut out Billings (Mont.) 10-0 behind Aaron Asato's two-hitter and topped West Seattle 11-2 on a five-hitter by Isaiah Diaz. Earlier, Aaron Asato pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts as Maui routed Billings (Montana), 10-0.

Wahine playing on FINA teams

Hawaii women's water polo player Carmen Eggens and former Rainbow Wahine Kelly Mason and Iefke van Belkum are competing for their respective countries at the FINA World Championships in Rome. Eggens, an incoming junior, is one of the youngest on the Canadian roster. Van Belkum, a member of the Dutch Olympic gold medal team last summer, is competing for the Netherlands.

Paddlers 2-hit Surfers in HCBL

Matt Augustine scattered two hits over eight innings and Secundino Sifuentes went 3 for 4 with an RBI to lead the Oahu Paddlers over the Waikiki Surfers 5-0 in a Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League game yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park. In another HCBL contest, Andrew Biancardi's bases-loaded triple in the sixth proved to be the difference as the Hawaii Aliis held off the Kauai Menehunes 6-3.

Old South Marlin has catch of day

Team Old South Marlin No. 2 boated a 443-pound Pacific blue marlin yesterday during the second day of the 50th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament off Kailua-Kona. The catch moved the North Carolina team into second place with 691 points while Team Malaka of California , thanks to a tag-and-release 150-pound Pacific blue marlin, kept the lead with 900 points.

3 advance at junior girls

BEDMINSTER, N.J. » Baldwin's Cassy Isagawa, former Hilo native Kimberly Kim and Punahou's Alina Ching all qualified for today's first round of match play at the 61st U.S. Girls' Junior Amateur Championship.

Isagawa and Kim tied for 14th with 149s after yesterday's stroke-play portion at the Trump National Golf Club's New Course. Kim had been in a tie for ninth after a first-round 71 but carded a 78 yesterday; Isagawa rebounded from an opening-round 76 with a 73.

Ching finished at 156 for a share of 50th, 15 strokes behind medalist Amy Anderson of North Dakota.

Missing the cut of the top 64 was Punahou's Cyd Okino, whose two-day total of 166 left her tied for 116th place in the field of 156.

» At the boys championship on the par-71 Old Course, 'Iolani's Lorens Chan ballooned to a second-round 83 (155 total) and missed the cut by a stroke.

HPU soccer lands Kapaa's Fuerte

Kapaa graduate Ikaika Fuerte, who helped the Warriors to their first Division II state soccer championship, has signed to play for Hawaii Pacific. Fuerte made the state championship's all-tournament team as a junior and a senior. Sea Warriors add 2 Incoming freshmen Kauanani Wall and Amber Fuller have signed to play for the Hawaii Pacific women's soccer team.  Wall is a Konawaena graduate and the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Player of the Year this past season for the Wildcats. Fuller, a Kamehameha graduate, was an all-state selection. She helped the Warriors to three state championships
