Pairing seminar goes over basics

Learn the fundamentals of food and wine pairing at The Wine Stop on Sunday.

The seminar promises to teach “;the secrets of creating great food and wine combinations”; and will allow participants to taste the flavors themselves.

The event runs 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the store at 1809 S. King St. Cost is $30. Call 946-3707.

On July 31, stop by for a visit with Rolando Herrera of Mi Sueno Winery, who will talk story about his wines. Herrera will be on hand 5 to 8 p.m. Cost is $20.

50th anniversary prompts menu

Chef Yves Garner, known for Halekulani's neoclassic French cuisine at La Mer, is celebrating 50 years in the culinary field with a degustation menu that runs through November.

Based on the chef's career memories, he's put together this menu:

Spiny Lobster in Aspic with Gold Leaf Salad “;Victoria,”; Sweetbread a la King in Rice Pilaf Savarin, Dorade “;Meuniere and Oyster in Thermidor Sauce, Fillet of Sole with Tomato and Mushroom Hollandaise, Foie Gras Poached with Vegetables in Aromatic Bouillon, Squab on Braised Savoy Cabbage and Pork Belly with Natural Jus, Tournedos of Beef Arlesienne Style with Classic Chateaubriand Sauce, French Cheese Selection and Poached Peach on Pistachio Ice Cream with Rose Syrup.

Cost is $150, with an additional $72 for wine pairing or $120 for champagne pairing. Call 923-2311.

Sergio's offers dinner bargains

Local fans of Sergio's Italian Restaurant can get a deep discount on Kama'aina Tuesdays, when the purchase of a salad earns you 50 percent off entrees.

The special applies to all entrees except the Ossobuco alla Milanese.

The restaurant also offers a three-course complete dinner for $19.50.

Make commute to organic grocer

Do your organic grocery shopping right after work at “;One Night Stand,”; a market that runs 5 to 7:30 p.m. July 30 right outside Na Mea Hawaii store at the Ewa end of Ward Warehouse.

The market will feature organic fruits and veggies such as mango, papaya, pineapple, sprouts, salads and mushrooms.

It will also sell vegetable starters for people to start their own gardens.

Prepared foods will be on sale as well, including smoothies, teas, baked goods, jams, pastele with gandule rice, papaya salad, noni juice and kawa.

Na Mea Hawaii, which sells Hawaiian and Hawaii-made products, is partnering with Just Add Water, an organization that supports local organic farming, to present the market. Call 596-8885.

Whole Foods offers movie pass

Fans of culinary maven Julia Child will want to head out bright and early to Whole Foods Market today through Sunday. The store is offering passes to a private screening of “;Julie & Julia,”; a film starring Meryl Streep as Child.

The first 50 customers to visit the customer service desk will receive a pass admitting two to the 7 p.m. screening on July 30 at Consolidated Theatres' Kahala venue. Whole Foods hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Call 738-0820.
