Jailed men fight over sandwiches

A 50-year-old man being held at the main police station was re-arrested for allegedly stealing two jelly sandwiches from another man in the cellblock.

Police said the older man took the sandwiches from a 47-year-old man who was being brought into the suspect's cell at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, slapping him on the head.

The victim complained of head pain but refused treatment, a police report said.

Fishy story ends search for woman

A Fire Department, Coast Guard and police search for a woman reported missing when an inflatable boat overturned near Magic Island was called off early yesterday when the “;story started to unravel,”; said Fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

He said the search was launched at about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday after a boater claimed he flipped over his 18-foot semirigid inflatable near the Ala Wai Channel. He said his 35-year-old wife was on the boat with him and that he could not find her, Seelig said.

“;He swam in, apparently,”; said Seelig.

The boat washed into the lagoon at Magic Island, pushed by a strong swell, he said.

A fire helicopter, fire boat and rescue watercraft searched several hours for the woman, and firefighters walked the beach and breakwater looking for her, Seelig said.

“;It turned out his wife was not on the boat,”; he said. “;We were thinking maybe another person was on the boat, but he basically told police he was alone.”;

HILO » The Coast Guard rescued three people Wednesday whose boat was sinking off the Big Island.

Fire Department officials say a rescue boat was launched from Pohoiki Bay to begin the search early Wednesday.

A Coast Guard helicopter and a C-130 search-and-rescue plane also responded to the distress call, officials said.

The Coast Guard chopper rescued the people one mile off Kehena Beach and flew them to Hilo airport.
