Isle journalists pay tribute to Corky

POSTED: Sunday, June 28, 2009

The Honolulu Advertiser won 14 first-place awards and the top public service honors in Hawaii's Excellence in Journalism Awards.

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin won eight top prizes, while the Maui News captured two in the contest sponsored by the Hawaii chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

KHNL won the TV public service reporting award and one other top prize, while KITV had three first-place finishes.

Radio awards were split between Hawaii Public Radio and reporting by Heidi Chang for Voice of America.

The top awards for public service went to The Honolulu Advertiser's report on abuse in Hawaii homes, and to KHNL's Leland Kim for reporting on the state's doctor shortage.

The ceremony Friday night was somewhat bitter-sweet.

SPJ Hawaii presented a lifetime of achievement award to Star-Bulletin cartoonist Corky Trinidad, who also swept the editorial cartoon category with a first place and two finalists awards.

Trinidad died in February after a battle with cancer. His wife, Hana, and son Lorenzo accepted in his place.

Freelance photographer Sergio Goes, who died last summer in a diving accident while taking photos, won a first-place award for a photo essay in Hawaii Business magazine. He also won two finalist awards for his underwater photography.

Several reporters who have left Hawaii journalism, including former Star-Bulletin reporter Laurie Au and former Honolulu Advertiser reporter Kevin Dayton, also won awards.

Before the ceremony began, SPJ Hawaii Chapter President David Briscoe announced that three awards in the student journalism category were being withheld pending an investigation into allegations that a University of Hawaii-Manoa student journalist fabricated sources in his stories.
