Woman fatally struck by small bus identified

The 54-year-old Honolulu woman who was fatally struck June 8 by a small Roberts Hawaii tour bus was identified yesterday by the Medical Examiner's Office as Phoebe Fe Gagarin.

Gagarin was crossing makai on North School Street in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by the bus turning left on a green light from the mauka-bound lanes of Gulick Avenue.

Gagarin died from blunt force injuries to the head and chest due to the accident, the Medical Examiner's Office said.

Man arrested for allegedly setting fire to sister's home

Police on Tuesday arrested a 49-year-old Pauoa man who allegedly set fire to his 53-year-old sister's house in Central Oahu on Oct. 16.

Police said the brother and sister were in a heated argument over ownership rights and legal control of property.

The brother allegedly set fire to the sister's house while she and her family were asleep.

No one was injured in the fire, police said.

The man was arrested Tuesday for investigation of second-degree arson. He was released later that day pending further investigation.

Police officer charged with abuse of his girlfriend

A 44-year-old Windward police officer has been charged with three counts of abuse of a household member and second-degree terroristic threatening.

David A. Vasconcellos was released on $5,100 bail. He has been reassigned to desk duty, and turned in his gun and badge. His case is being investigated by the department's Internal Affairs division.

Vasconcellos, a 21-year veteran of the Honolulu Police Department, was assigned to the Windward District and worked out of the Kailua and Kaneohe stations.

Vasconcellos allegedly argued with his girlfriend just before midnight Sunday and slapped her at a Kailua bar. The two went to his Kailua home where he allegedly slapped her during an argument two hours later. This was repeated about two hours after that, police said. The woman, also in her mid-40s, received minor injuries, including scratches, police said.

Moiliili resident arrested in robbery of nearby store

Police arrested a 23-year-old man who allegedly robbed a Moiliili business at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said the man robbed the lone female employee of the business and fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

76-year-old charged with sex assault of 8-year-old

Authorities on Tuesday charged a 76-year-old Pearl City man with allegedly sexually assaulting a girl from 2006 to 2009.

Albert T. Kusunoki was arrested Monday. He was charged with first-degree sexual assault and two counts of third-degree sexual assault. Bail was set at $75,000.

Police said the girl's mother reported the girl, 8, said she had been sexually assaulted by a family member.
