21-year-old man is charged in Central Oahu shootings

Authorities charged Daniel W. Womack, 21, yesterday in the BB-gun shootings in Wahiawa and Mililani on Friday night.

Womack was charged with first-degree assault.

Womack was one of two men who allegedly fired BB gun pistols from a car at three women and three men in Mililani and Wahiawa. The BBs struck at least two people and a plate glass window.

A second 21-year-old man was also arrested, but was released pending investigation.

Medical examiner rules Manoa drowning a suicide

A 32-year-old man who was found Sunday in a Manoa swimming pool drowned, and the manner of death was determined to be suicide, the Medical Examiner's Office said.

The man was identified yesterday as Jay Durant of Honolulu.

Emergency Medical Services personnel responded but were unable to resuscitate him.

Maui firefighters battle 300-acre Kihei brush blaze

Some 45 firefighters, four helicopters, six water tankers and six bulldozers battled a brush fire Sunday that burned 300 acres of land and came within 200 yards of the nearest subdivision in South Maui.

The fire was reported at 12:26 p.m. Sunday, and firefighters cut firebreaks in Kihei to prevent it from spreading.

Forty firefighters were at the scene yesterday to continue to place firebreaks in the area and monitor hot spots.

The fire was reported 80 percent contained yesterday. The brush fire burned vacant land mauka of Ohukai Road in South Kihei.
