Driver hurt after hitting propane tank

A woman was critically injured in an explosive crash after her car hit a propane tank at a home on Lower Kula Road yesterday afternoon, Maui police said.

The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition after the crash just before 6 p.m., said Lt. Bobby Hill.

The house on the 4000 block of Lower Kula Road sustained substantial damage, Hill said. Fiber-optic cables in the area were also damaged.

No one was home at the time and the woman was alone in the vehicle.

Police were investigating the cause of the crash.

 

2 kayakers rescued from coastal cave

Lifeguards and firefighters rescued two kayakers trapped by high waves inside a cave on Kauai's Na Pali Coast yesterday, according to a county news release.

A firefighter and lifeguard went into the “;Two Door Cave”; to pull the two men to safety.

The rescue was the first use of a new Jet Ski given to the Hanalei Fire Station by an anonymous donor, the fire department said.

The kayakers were taken to Kee Beach where they received treatment for minor injuries and were released.
