Waianae team is tops

A Waianae High School team won “;Best of Show”; in the 2009 Hawaii Medical Service Association's Teen Video Awards.

The annual competition drew 220 videos from teens in public and independent middle and high schools about the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

The Waianae Team — which won both the Best of Show and Best Social Health public service announcements with “;Internet Safety Tales”; — included students Traci-Ann Humann, Heidi Neidhardt and Melody Rigney, with teacher Michael Oconnor.

The top 68 PSAs were premiered at a ceremony at Consolidated Ward Theatre and the best were honored. Among them were:

» Best Drug-Free PSA, “;Can't Hear Me,”; Waianae High School students Samuel Balecha, Brittni Dinong, Jonathan Dinong, Ashley Guerrero, Mhanivel Moresca, Aaron Oshiro, Brittney Rojo, Sean Sarajina and Jonathan Straley; teacher, John Allen III.

» Best Underage Drinking Prevention PSA, “;Life choices,”; Maui High School students Melatia Cabrera and Anna Dela Cruz; teacher, Clint Gima.

» Best Tobacco-Free PSA, “;Item Number: DEATH,”; Maui High School students Taylor Edwards and Rachel Yanos; teacher, Clint Gima.

» First-place winners in each category received $1,000 for video equipment or software for their schools. Second and third-place winners received $500 and $250, respectively.

An additional $1,000 went to the “;Best of Show”; winner.
