Check with airlines when flying with pets

Question: We're taking our pets on a plane trip. Any tips?

Answer: Visit airline Web sites to learn requirements and find the most direct flights. Some airlines will not fly pets as extra baggage in the summer, for example, due to high temperatures on tarmacs. On each leg of your trip, ask the cabin crew to confirm that your pet was loaded aboard.

Get your pet used to being contained in a carrier—try feeding your cat or dog in the kennel and toss in some treats. Put an old shirt inside that has your scent. And of course, be sure your pet is traveling with ID tags that give your telephone number and/or the number of someone at your destination.
