LIHUE, Kauai » The first harvest on Tuesday from the Mayor's Aloha Garden yielded more than 25 pounds of vegetables that were donated to the Kauai Foodbank and the Salvation Army's soup kitchen, according to Kauai County. The vegetables included varieties of lettuce, cucumbers, beets, basil and peppers.

WAILUKU, Maui » The Maui Salary Commission voted not to increase the salary of the police chief, fire chief, prosecuting attorney and liquor control chief, according to the Maui News. The commission voted Thursday to maintain the current pay for the county officials, saying it was not appropriate to increase their pay while many people are losing their jobs, the paper said.

VOLCANO, Hawaii » Hikers are invited to participate in any one of four hikes planned to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Maunu Ulu eruption at Kilauea Volcano on May 24. The 3-mile hike will last two to three hours and start at 9 a.m. Participants should meet at the Mauna Ulu parking lot on Chain of Craters Road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Other hikes will take place throughout the day. The eruption started on May 24, 1969, and lasted five years.
