Michi Tamashiro, a Mid-Pacific Institute junior, won a 2009 American Visions Award for a work of art on paper that featured some of her handmade stuffed animals. She will be one of 67 to receive the award at Carnegie Hall in New York City in June.

Kauai residents Janice Bond of Lihue and Dr. Arnulfo Diaz of Kapaa were named Kauai's 2009 Outstanding Older Americans. Bond, 67, is a former public school teacher who volunteers for numerous organizations and programs. Diaz, 65, is a retired physician who also is an active volunteer.
