Gimme shelter ... and some shades

Other Hawaii schools would be smart to follow 'Iolani's lead in protecting students from the harmful effects of too much sun.

The Honolulu private school is renowned for a sun-safety program that encourages students to wear hats, sunscreen and sunglasses, and to seek shade when they can. A UH scientist praised 'Iolani this week — and encouraged other schools to follow suit — as he discussed a new study that found only 12 percent of the children observed on a sunny day on Oahu were wearing sunglasses.

It's been a tough year for the newspaper industry. Layoffs, downsizing, freezes, closures. Like many other folks feeling economic pain, BRUTAL.

So it was heartening earlier this week when the Pulitzer Prizes were awarded, a timely reminder of what quality journalism can do in exposing scandal and doing the public good. “;The watchdog still bites,”; said the Pulitzer administrator. Financials aside, long live our free press.
