UH softball sweeps twin bill on road

The Hawaii softball team completed its regular-season nonconference slate with a doubleheader sweep of Santa Clara yesterday at West Valley College Softball Field in Santa Clara, Calif.

Amanda Tauali'i and Tanisha Milca smacked two home runs apiece to lead a Rainbow Wahine offense which put up 21 runs on 31 hits. UH improved to 24-21 overall, while Santa Clara fell to 5-42.

Strotman is MPSF player of the week

Hawaii junior hitter Joe Strotman was named co-player of the week in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball, the first weekly honor of the season for the Warriors.

Strotman had career-highs of 30 kills and 12 digs in Saturday's 3-1 win over USC. He had 13 kills in Friday's 3-0 loss to the Trojans.

Sharing the honor with Strotman was BYU junior hitter Andrew Stewart.

Punahou's Oshiro gets top award

Punahou senior wrestler Reid Oshiro has been awarded the 2009 Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award for Hawaii.

The award is granted to one wrestler from each state by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Stillwater, Okla., based on wrestling ability as well as academics and character.

Chun named to Pan Am team

Hawaii native Clarissa Chun was named to the USA national wrestling team headed to Maaracaibo, Venezuela, for the Pan American Championships Thursday through Saturday.

Chun will compete in the 48 kilogram freestyle division.

Grand Canyon leads PacWest golf

Hawaii-Hilo trails Grand Canyon University by five strokes entering today's final round of the 2009 Hawaiian Airlines PacWest Men's Golf Championship in Antioch, Calif.

Play wraps up today with the final 18 holes in the 54-hole event at Roddy Ranch Golf Club.

Hilo players take weekly awards

Keoni Manago and Clayton Uyechi of Hawaii-Hilo are this week's PacWest baseball player and pitcher of the week, respectively, after three straight Vulcan wins over Dixie State.

Manago, a sophomore outfielder, batted .375 with three doubles and five runs scored. Uyechi, a senior right-hander, picked up a win by allowing one run and two hits in seven innings of work.

HPU sweeps softball weekly honors

Krystal Plunkett and Courtney Kessell were named the respective PacWest softball player and hitter of the week for April 13 to 19 after stellar outings against Chaminade.

Plunkett, a senior shortstop, batted .846 in four games against the Silverswords. Kessell, also a senior, won both of her starts with shutouts in both games.
