Woman attempts to scam restaurant over the phone

Big Island police are warning residents about a possible phone scam.

Police said a woman using a phone service for the hearing impaired called a Hilo restaurant to place a large order. The woman then asked the restaurant to deduct an additional $700 from her credit card and send the money to a private shipper using a local money transfer service, police said.

The woman then asked if the conversation could be continued via e-mail. The restaurant owner, recognizing the request as suspicious, sent an e-mail to the caller asking for clarification, police said. The caller did not respond.

Police advise people not to respond to such suspicious communications.
