The last time I saw the one-and-only Melveen Leed in church was when she sang at my wedding at Kawaiahao in 1974 when my late wife and I were married by Kahu Abraham Akaka. Wednesday, Melveen was jazzing it up in Kawaiahao's Weekly “;A Lenten Celebration and All That Jazz”; program. She was backed by pianist Betty Loo Taylor, guitarist Shoji Ledward, bassist Steve Jones and drummer Morgan Grant. I've been covering Mel for more than 40 years and she hasn't lost anything vocally and is still as funny as ever. She could have made it as a comedian, too. The former Molokai beauty queen looks much younger than 65. Among the songs she sang Wednesday were one of her favorites, “;It's Magic,”; a rendition of “;People”; oozing with feeling, “;East of the Sun and West of the Moon,”; “;I'll String Along With You”; and “;Love Letters.”; Guitarist Shoji was featured on “;In a Sentimental Mood.”; Shoji can play 'em both hot and mellow. Starr Kalahiki is the singer next Wednesday. Looking back at my wedding, I had asked Mel to sing three songs: “;Kanaka Waiwai,”; “;Pua Carnation”; and “;Lei Aloha Lei Makamae.”; Shortly before we were to walk down the aisle, Melveen went into the room where my bride to be and her attendants were waiting. She told them Ben wanted three songs: “;Kanaka Wai Wai,”; “;Pua Carnation”; and “;Please Release Me Let Me Go.”; You can imagine the looks of panic on their faces. See what I mean about Melveen being “;the one and only?”; ...
