Betsuin bazaar bounty

Papaaloa Hongwanji Mission, 25 miles outside of Hilo, has only about 50 members, but they're dedicated to sausage — particularly the smoked chicken sausage that is their specialty.

This weekend the sausage will be available at the Taste of Hongwanji Bazaar, 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, 1727 Pali Highway.

The sausages are just the beginning when it comes to the bounty at the betsuin. Along with homemade pickled vegetables, sushi and preserves, and hot dishes such as fried noodles and beef stew, the bazaar will feature Osaka Tako Balls and KC Waffle Dogs. Some of items brought back every year are quick sell-outs, such as the freshly baked Tamura Bread, a raisin bread named for Misao Tamura, who created the recipe as a volunteer for the Makawao Hongwanji Mission on Maui.

Parking is available at Hongwanji Mission School and Kawananakoa School. Call 522-9200.
