Stanford sweeps Hawaii
POSTED: Friday, February 27, 2009
The mixed plate that was Hawaii's revamped lineup was a couple of scoops short of success last night. Instead, it was the “;Loco-Moco”; that Stanford put out on the Stan Sheriff Center court - with four former island prep standouts starting - that proved to be the winning combo.

Cardinal junior opposite Evan Romero finished with a match-high 21 kills, but he had more than enough help from his Hawaii-born teammates in the 30-28, 30-26, 30-27 victory watched by 1,604 (2,585 tickets).
Freshman middle Brad Lawson ('Iolani '08) added 11 kills; junior setter Kawika Shoji ('Iolani '06) had 48 assists and 10 digs; sophomore hitter Spencer McLachlin (Punahou '07) eight kills; and freshman libero Erik Shoji (Punahou '08) 12 digs in the 1 hour, 55-minute win for Stanford (10-7, 6-6 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation).
Hawaii (3-9, 2-7), using Nejc Zemljak at setter and ex-setter Sean Carney on the outside, was led by Joshua Walker's 13 kills.
The teams meet again tomorrow night at 7.
While Kawika Shoji had played in the Sheriff Center as a freshman in 2007, it was the first experience playing “;at home”; for McLachlin, Lawson and Erik Shoji. The Shoji brothers are sons of Rainbow Wahine volleyball coach Dave and McLachlin the son of KFVE volleyball commentator Chris.
“;It was weird,”; Spencer McLachlin said. “;In Game 1, I looked at the scoreboard and it said 'Stanford 15, Warriors 13' and I was like, 'Oh, we're losing. ... Wait, we're winning.' It took a while to get used to it.”;
Added Erik Shoji: “;Being back in what is basically my second home was strange, playing in front of our fans ... I mean, their fans.”;
In the end, Stanford made the plays when Hawaii couldn't.
“;A couple points here and there ... these are matches we can win,”; said Carney, who had six kills and an ace in his new role. “;There was some loss of focus.”;
“;It was a couple errors that took the momentum away from us,”; added UH senior hitter Jim Clar, coming off the bench in Set 2 to finish with seven kills. “;In a game like this, you can't afford those errors.”;
The night started off well for Hawaii, which led for most of Set 1, including 15-13 at the technical break. Walker's led error set off a 4-0 run by Stanford, with Lawson putting down two of his kills for a 17-15 Cardinal lead.
The Warriors rallied as Carney's ace put the Warriors back in front by two (21-19). Romero continued his hot hitting, with three of his 10 Set 1 kills helping the Cardinal pull to a 22-22 tie.
It was deadlocked seven more times, the last at 27-all, before Romero gave the Cardinal set point with two straight kills. Hawaii held off one attempt when Zemljak connected with Jarrod Lofy for a rare kill from a middle, but McLachlin ended the Warriors' hopes with his third kill.
Stanford carried the momentum over to Set 2, pulling away from a 13-13 tie to leads of 20-14 and 23-16. Hawaii didn't fold, going to its bench for fresh arms in Clar and freshman Gus Tuaniga, and closed to 28-26. But the gap proved too much and the Cardinal finished it out with a kill by Romero and a block of Tuaniga by Kawika Shoji and Garrett Werner.
The Warriors found momentum and success in Set 3, leading by as many as two - 12-10. The Cardinal grabbed it right back, winning key rallies to go ahead at 15-14.
It was 23-23 and then it was over, with Kawika Shoji serving for three points during a spurt that gave the Cardinal a 27-23 cushion and - eventually - a third straight win over the Warriors.
