Kapiolani celebrates a century of medical care

Several descendants of people who 100 years ago founded Kauikeolani Children's Hospital, which became Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, attended a centennial dinner at the Hawaii Convention Center last Saturday. They included Patsy Sheehan, Lia Dwight, Nainoa Thompson, Tioni Judd, Kaimi Judd, Jennifer Ching and Fred Gartley. They are descendants of Albert and Emma Wilcox, Elizabeth Low and Sanford Dole, Dr. James R. Judd, and Alonzo Gartley, respectively. Among the crowd of 700 were Jim Nabors, Gov. Linda Lingle, Mayor Mufi Hannemann, former Gov. Ben and Vicky Cayetano and pro golfer Tadd Fujikawa, born prematurely at Kapiolani in 1991. Former KGMB9 anchor Kim Gennaula, Kapiolani's newest philanthropy director, had a lively table. Joining her were her husband, KGMB9's weather anchor Guy Hagi, Lt. Col. Reggie Patel and wife Chaitali, Frank Manuma and wife Debbie, Djuan Rivers, and Audra Stevenson. Mayor Mufi Hannemann, Frank's cousin, stopped by and said hello. Most of the table guests went to the Manumas' home for a bit of post-partying and singing by Frank. They were joined by Keala Peters, and Tony and Martha Smith. ...Interior designer Charles Heen, who died New Years Eve at age 79, was a protege of renowned artist Jean Charlot. Charles and I attended Roosevelt at the same time. Years later, Charles told me that Charlot gave him a treasured gift when he received his master of fine arts degree from UH in 1953. Charlot handed Charles a roll of canvas much larger than a diploma and said to be careful with it. It turned out to be a portrait of Charles from the chest up drawn by Charlot—priceless ...

Tia Carrere and Wayne Brady will cohost the Grammy pre-telecast Feb. 8. The stream will launch online at 11 a.m. Tia will also sing the opening song, accompanied by Daniel Ho. Tia and Daniel have been pals since their Honolulu school days. Duke's Waikiki marked its 16th anniversary Jan. 23 by making donations of $7,000 to the Hawaii Food Bank and $3,000 to Surfing the Nations. G.M. Ross Anderson made the presentations to the Food Bank's Patty Kauahi and Surfing the Nations' founders Tom and Cindy Bauer. The Contemporary Museum is combining a cocktail cruise aboard the Superferry with a dinner-dance at the Superferry Terminal after the cruise for its ConTempo fundraiser April 18.
