Volleyball magazine honor to Houston

Hawaii senior hitter Jamie Houston has been named to the Under Armour/Volleyball magazine All-America first team that will be published next month.

Houston, a second-team AVCA All-American, was a two-time Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year. She led the Rainbow Wahine this past season in kills (4.05 kps) and finished No. 2 in the UH record books in kills (2,061).

Joining Houston on the first team is 2005 Kalani High graduate Tamari Miyashiro, a junior libero at Washington. Miyashiro was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Hawaii freshman Kanani Danielson was named to the All-America honorable-mention list.

Penn State's Nicole Fawcett and Foluke Akinradewo of Stanford shared Player of the Year honors. Nebraska's John Cook earned Coach of the Year and Florida's Kelly Murphy was named Freshman of the Year.

Seasiders take top spot in West Region

Brigham Young-Hawaii sits atop the rankings in the first NCAA Division II West Region men's basketball poll of the season released yesterday. Pacific West Conference foe Chaminade debuts at No. 10.

The top eight teams in each region at the end of the regular season will be awarded postseason berths.

The Seasiders (13-1, 7-0) are ranked fourth nationally in the coaches poll and have matched their best start in school history.

The teams face each other tonight in Laie.
