Kahuku holds off Kalaheo for season sweep

By

POSTED: Sunday, January 25, 2009

No. 2 Kahuku survived a brutal six-day stretch unscathed with its biggest win yet.

Playing their fourth game in six days, the Red Raiders fought off exhaustion, a hostile road crowd and a Kalaheo team that wouldn't give in to pull out a 56-52 Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball victory over the fifth-ranked Mustangs last night.

Jray Galeai and Nehoa Akina led Kahuku with 11 points, but Kahuku got big plays from a number of players to fight off Kalaheo.

“;For us to come out of here with a win is a big boost to our program,”; Kahuku coach Hiram Akina said. “;You don't walk out of here with wins like this. (Kalaheo coach) Chico (Furtado) gets so much out of his team.”;

Kahuku handled Kalaheo in the first meeting this season, winning by 16 at home. A 3-pointer by Nehoa Akina gave the Red Raiders a 12-9 lead in the first quarter, and they never relinquished the lead, although Kalaheo came close many times.

“;The biggest thing is our free throws,”; said Furtado, who saw his team shoot 8-for-21 from the line. “;This had nothing to do with lack of effort. I'm proud of the way our kids hung in there. But sometimes effort isn't enough.”;

A 3-point play by Galeai, who had six of his 11 points in the final period, gave Kahuku its largest lead at 51-41 with just over a minute remaining.

The Red Raiders led by nine with 30 seconds left when Richard Preza Haynes sank a free throw to make it eight. Aaron Fernandez, one of three Mustangs in double figures with 14 points, swished his third 3-pointer of the game with 15 seconds left.

After a turnover on the inbounds pass by Kahuku, Shawn Higa scored a layup with 10 seconds left to make it 55-52. But without any timeouts, Kalaheo couldn't stop the clock and Kahuku ran off 6 seconds before inbounding the ball.

Irwin Ah-Hoy was fouled with 1.4 seconds left, and hit one of two from the line to seal Kahuku's seventh straight conference win.

“;We knew Kalaheo was going to step up and be tough coming in,”; Galeai said. “;Once it got close, we stepped up our defense and made just enough plays to win.”;

The win gives the Red Raiders a two-game lead in the loss column in the OIA Red East. They're on course for a No. 1 seed and first-round bye in the playoffs.

Kalaheo and Moanalua are tied with two losses apiece, but play each other two more times in the regular season.
